Last year I traveled at the invitation of our Global Dignity Brazil Country Chair, Young Global Leader Ms. Christina Lopes, to participate in their Global Dignity Day celebrations in and for Brazil (more than 50 countries participated on October 17th, 2012 around the world).  I had no idea what I was in for, but when you witness the spirit of the energy of these young people, you cannot help but to be moved.  I actually was hesitant to watch this video, because I knew that I would be both sad, and inspired at the same time. I knew I might cry.  All were true, but ultimately, I was left with an immense feeling of hope for them, for Brazil, and for our world.

Operation HOPE and Financial Literacy Featured in New Book: Practicing Sustainability

This new book on sustainability applies to everybody. But everybody applies it differently, by defining and shaping it differently—much as water is edged and shaped by its container. It is conceived in absolute terms but underpinned by a great diversity of relatively “green”—and sometimes contradictory—practices that can each make society only more or less sustainable.

In Practicing Sustainability, chefs, poets, music directors, evangelical pastors, skyscraper architects, artists, filmmakers, as well as scientific leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, business executives, policy makers, and the contrarians, shed light on our understanding of sustainability and the role that each of us can play. Ambassador Yuzawa stood arm in arm with John Hope Bryant and Operation HOPE in the days, weeks and months immediately following the Rodney King Riots of South Central Los Angeles, in 1992. Ambassador Yuzawa served as a bridge builder then, and since, between blacks, whites and Asians, in the hostage crisis later in Peru, where he played a role in achieving peace once again, and in so many other contexts and environments.  Ambassador Yuzawa speaks English, Spanish, Japanese and the international language of peace.  Ambassador Yuzawa is a legend of leadership, and we are honored to have him at the HOPE Global Financial Dignity Summit, 2012, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Born in Yokohama,Japan ,1940. Married.

We are honored to announce that the Honorable Penny Low will speak during the closing session of the HOPE Global Financial Dignity Summit on November 14th-15th, 2012, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Miss Penny Low has traversed more than 60 countries and is one of the 32 founding members of the New Asian Leaders by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF). WEF has honoured Penny as one of the 237 (out of 8,000 worldwide) founding members of the prestigious The Forum of Global Young Leaders (YGL). She has also been appointed by Prof Kluas Schwab, Chairman & Founder of the WEF at a Davos meeting, as the official link between the YGL and the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs. She recently completed the Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. In 2007, Penny was honoured as a Yale World Fellow and a Yale Scholar by the Yale University, USA.

In 2001, Penny was the youngest elected female Member of Parliament in Singapore. Currently, she chaired the Government Parliamentary Committees (GPC) for Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts, and serves on the GPC for Ministry of Finance, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Education. In addition to being the Chairperson on the Singapore-Peru Parliamentary Friendship Group, Vice-Chairperson of the North East Community Development Council, and the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council, she is also a Labour Union Advisor, active on several national committees, in particular those promoting enterprises and social entrepreneurship, town and community development, and inter-nation parliamentary friendship groups.

The long-term future of the U.S. economy rests on the shoulders of young people who are eager to start businesses, create jobs and be their own bosses but don’t necessarily have the skills to pull that off.

The most recent Gallup-Hope Index, a measure of entrepreneurial engagement and financial literacy, found that 45 percent of students in grades five through 12 want to start their own company, and 77 percent want to be their own boss.

The students responded to a nationally representative poll conducted by the Gallup Organization in partnership with Operation HOPE. 

On Wednesday, about 300 high-achieving Omaha Avenue Scholars, community business leaders and 300 Gallup employees converged on the Joslyn Museum to hear John Hope Bryant, the chief executive and founder of Operation HOPE, encourage more students to fight back against “thug culture” and to “make smart sexy again.”

“Everything you do matters,” Bryant said. “This is not a recession we’re in. It’s a reset.”

The vast majority of the 1,721 students surveyed said they aren’t afraid to take risks, never give up and are regularly thinking of new ideas — qualities characteristic of entrepreneurs.

But only about half report that their schools offer classes on how to run a business and 54 percent learn lessons about finance and banking. Fifty-eight percent of students reported having their own bank account, and about one-in-five spend more than one hour a week doing a paid job.
