This week our strategic partners in Saudi Arabia, SEDCO Holdings, introduced Riyali, our localized version of Banking on Our Future, College Edition, into course presentations at King Abdul Aziz University.

The Riyali Progrm was extremely well reeived by the students and faculty alike, and the SEDCO Holdings team, and SEDCO Ambassadors (their volunteer corps) deserve credit for making this vision of 'silver rights' empowerment real to and for the people of Saudi Arabia.

HOPE Fellows and HOPE Interns Initiative is on the Move!

I am so excited to report that a little more than a month after we formally announced the HOPE FILE (HOPE Fellows, HOPE Interns and HOPE Loaned Executives) Program, our leader for the effort, Ms. Elaine Fischer, reports that we have received more than 350 applications!  

350 completed applications, since February 6th 2012, from interested college and university graduate and undergraduate students from across the nation.  This is just amazing, and we look forward to engaging many of these young bright lights into the on-the-ground operations of HOPE nationwide, and eventually internationally too.

This is precisely why Jim Clifton is one of my corporate heroes.  The world knows Jim Clifton as chairman and chief executive officer of the Gallup Organization, but I know him as the man who quietly supports a number of HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges & Universities), who chairs the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, who innovated the Gallup-HOPE Index, which I believe will change our world by impacting an entire generation of young people, 4th grade through 12th grade in America.  But I also know Jim Clifton as a corporate mentor and business role model to first young A.J. Wurie, and now Rashaan Mateen.  And what a role model Rashaan has in Jim.

HOPE National Board Member Stephen Ryan, Esq Becomes First Individual Donor to HOPE Fellows Program

Today I was thrilled to accept a $5,000 personal commitment from Operation HOPE national board member Stephen Ryan, Esq, partner in McDermott, Will & Emery in Washington, D.C., for a partial HOPE Fellows scholarship for 2012-2013. The Stephen Ryan-Operation HOPE Fellow, once selected, will work in the Washington, D.C. office of Operation HOPE, alongside Jena Roscoe, chief of Government Relations and Public Policy for Operation HOPE.

A special thank you to director Stephen Ryan, Esq!  We hope that countless others follow his lead in the weeks, months and years to come!

Newark Mayor Cory Booker Shows Leadership On Financial Literacy Agenda

Financial literacy is the founding first tool on the road to financial dignity for all. 

I was honored to join Newark Mayor Cory Booker earlier this year for the first ever White House Urban Entrepreneurship Summit where I and others spoke, and Operation HOPE was a partner in the effort with the mayor and the Obama Administration.  One of the ideas advanced during the summit, by Michael Blake from the Obama Administration and others including Reshma Saujani (pictured above), was the creation of a Mayor's Financial Literacy Council in Newark, New Jersey, fashioned after the U.S. President's Advisory Council on Financial Capability (on which I serve for the President).

While many public officials these days are rightly so accused of talking and seldom if ever delivering, I am pleased to say today that Mayor Cory Booker did precisely the opposite here.  He said very little about the initiartive in the weeks following the summit, but then after a subsequent meeting between another member of the President's Council, my friend Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz (also Council Partnership Committee Chair), and later myself and my right arm for policy Jena Roscoe, I was informed that the mayor intended to act. And act he did.
