Operation HOPE and Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti Stand in Support of Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline in Los Angeles

This week Operation HOPE stood with my friend and HOPE Partner, Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti, as we announced the results of the work of the Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline, and stood with families and individuals who have had their lives positively impacted, and in each case their home saved, because of our work.

What most do not know is that the Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline, which is now national, has modified or helped to restructure more than $450 million in mortgages (half a $ billion) and served more than 100,000 individuals and familes, was originally the idea of one Eric Garcetti.  That's right -- a politician actually doing his job, as public servant.

Operation HOPE, Literally Banking on Our Future: Introducing Ms. Chevon Miles

    Founder's Note: I was inspired to receive the below note in my inbox over the weekend, from an aspiring financial dignity leader and silver rights worker for this generation, Ms. Chevon Miles of Hampton University.  Operation HOPE, as a nonprofit organization ourselves, cannot often sponsor others but we were proud to provide some modest but important support to and for Ms. Miles. Read and be inspired yourself.

Good Morning,
 
            Saturday, October 1, 2011, will be a day that I will always remember as the day when I, Chevon Krystina Miles, participated in the 17th Annual MissHampton University Scholarship Pageant. Unfortunately I didn't win the title of Miss Hampton University , but I did learn more about myself than I had ever known. What I learned was that:

• I can and will accomplish any of my dreams with hard work and dedication
• I am comfortable with myself in more ways then one
• And
• I have the best family, friends, and support system a young woman could ever dream of.

I received the award for the “Outstanding Fundraiser”, which I could not have done that without all of your support. I will continue my platform of "Bringing awareness to and improving financial literacy-one school at a time" first on Hampton 's campus through the MasterCard Are You Credit Wise? college intern program, and as I build up some support on campus I will reach out to the local Hampton City high schools.

Entrepreneurship Lesson #1: You Don't Need Financial Capital to Start Your Business

My driver here in South Africa, Sandila, quizzed Mary Hagerty and I about how to start a business. After my radio program last night he was focused on the question of capital. He seemed to think that without much money, he had little to no chance to start a business. I told him that "capital" originally came from the Latin word capitas, or "knowledge in the head."

Sandila thought about this, and this morning, on our way back from a television interview at E TV here in South Africa, he announced to me that he had spoken with a friend and learned that actually, he did not need financial capital right now after all. He could simply locate his first client, and then go to a bank, using the client contract as collateral, and finance his first car to drive his first client. I told Sandila that he just passed the first lesson of entrepreneurship, which is to never give up, or give in, or to let something get in his way towards success.

Sandila will be very successful as a small business owner because he thinks creatively about solving problems. This, is the future of South Africa.

A HOPE Leader Speaks Out on Predatory Payday Lenders, and Also Speaks Up For Themselves

 The following note was sent to me by one of my HOPE Leaders (an employee), which only proves and underscores that these issues of financial literacy, financial illiteracy, and financial predators, reaches and impacts all -- even our own people.  The key is becoming empowered, and then doing something about it.  As you can see below, this employee of mine is doing precisely that.  Should be an inspiration, for all.

HCA and Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline Success Story

This is the story of Yolanda from Compton, California.  We will not use her last name to protect her privacy.

Yolanda is a single African American woman on a fixed income due to disability. Yolanda owed $274,000  in an adjustable rate mortgage with an 11.75% interest rate, paying $3,360 per month. Yolanda was 5 months behind in her mortgage due to her payment increasing facing foreclosure.  The lender offered her a modification, and the initial offer was to bring her loan current and an 11.35% adjustable rate.

Operation HOPE negotiated with the lender and they offered her a 5.5% fixed rate with a payment of $1,655.

Yolanda was extremely happy with her modification, arranged through Operation HOPE, allowing her to remain in her home with an affordable payment.

A small bonus to this story for me -- Compton, California is my hometown.
